Revenue Cycle Specialist

About the role

The Revenue Cycle Specialist will support the team by reviewing and managing billing activity related to clinical trial patients. This individual will help reduce an existing billing backlog by determining whether charges should remain on patient accounts or be transferred to the appropriate research study account. Key Responsibilities Review patient charges and claims for clinical trial participants. Determine appropriate billing responsibility between patient and research study accounts. Analyze patient charts and clinical documentation to validate billed services. Review clinical trial protocols and Medicare Coverage Analyses (MCA) to support billing decisions. Apply Medicare research billing requirements, including Q0/Q1 modifiers when appropriate. Evaluate charges using knowledge of CPT codes, medical procedures, and treatment workflows. Maintain research billing information within the EMR and clinical trials management systems. Enter and update Medicare Coverage Analysis information. Support research timeline maintenance and billing compliance activities. Assist with audits of clinical trial billing activity. Review chargemaster and CPT code alignment between research budgets and actual services rendered. Identify billing discrepancies and recommend corrective actions. Collaborate with Clinical Research Finance & Compliance, Research Billing, Principal Investigators, research coordinators, and nursing staff. Support system testing, process improvement initiatives, and special projects. Work independently to resolve billing questions using clinical documentation, research protocols, and Medicare guidance. Required Qualifications: 2+ years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle, medical billing, coding, clinical research, or a related healthcare function. Experience reviewing medical bills, claims, charges, or coding documentation. Working knowledge of healthcare billing, reimbursement, and revenue cycle processes. Familiarity with CPT coding and medical billing concepts. Ability to review and interpret patient charts and clinical documentation. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to independently investigate billing discrepancies and make informed decisions. Comfortable working across multiple systems and managing detailed work queues. Ability to work onsite in Columbus three days per week. Preferred Qualifications Clinical research billing or clinical trial billing experience Oncology or cancer-center billing experience Medicare Coverage Analysis (MCA) experience Knowledge of Medicare research billing requirements, including Q0/Q1 modifiers Epic experience, particularly within revenue cycle, claims, billing, or patient chart review workflows Hospital or health system revenue cycle experience Medical billing and coding experience Understanding of CPT codes and chargemaster maintenance Clinical (LPN, RN, or similar) with the ability to connect clinical care to billing outcomes Experience with denials, pre-certification, or billing review functions CCS or similar coding certification (preferred, not required) Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Columbus, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
